An Antique Chinese Scroll

Talk about a framing challenge.

As this is an antique item, it had to be framed using conservation methods. The scroll measured about 1 meter wide x 1.8 meters in length. Mounting was the tricky part, not so much that it is an antique, but because of its size. To mount it properly and securely, I had to secure the timber bars using screws. Normally for conservation framing, we try to preserve the item as much as possible and avoid screwing, but I had to compromise on the strength of the mounting, so I decided to use this method instead.

Due to the size of the frame, it is impossible to use glass. It is just too heavy. Off to my acrylic supplier I went. I had him cut me the right size UV filtering acrylic for the frame.

Although it was an interesting work, I'd opt not to frame large items like these, as its hard for a one-man band like myself. The size does make it a challenge.

But I know that I can do it.
